Lumen

Harbor · Lumen

A small studio working at the edge of maps and light.

Lumen is an independent project run by two people who read charts the way other people read novels. We make a slow journal and print the things we cannot stop writing.

What we do

Journal

Lumen Atlas

A slow journal about cartography, coastlines and the way light moves over water. Written by hand, posted when ready. Not a blog in the busy sense — just a record of what we notice.

Imprint

Lumen Press

A two-person print imprint working in risograph, letterpress and short-run binding. We take few projects so we can take them seriously — and we set and print the Atlas.

About the studio

The name comes from the Latin for light and the old habit of lighthouse keepers who measured distance by how far their beam could reach on a clear night. We find that a useful way to think about most work: how far does it travel, and is it still readable when it gets there?

The Atlas is the reading half of the project. The Press is the making half. Same people, same lighthouse on the door, two different jobs. Both live under this roof.
